AVID at OLMS
Adancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is a national college preparatory program focused on accelerated student learning, using research-based methods of effective instruction, and promoting a catalyst for system change within schools. AVID strategies are infused school-wide at OLMS through use of Cornell Notes, Interactive Student Notebooks, the AVID binder for organization, and a variety of research-based instructional strategies. Sixth grade students with the standard elective rotation experience a 10-week exploratory elective called Approaches to Learning, which focuses on the skills most important for middle school success. We offer AVID elective courses for our 7th and 8th grade students. Admission to the AVID elective is based upon student application, essay and interview.
Who is an avid student?
AVID students generally have a G.P.A. of 2.5-3.5, good attendance, little or no discipline record, MEAP scores in the 2-3 range, and have the potential to succeed in rigorous coursework such as advanced math and/or world language courses.
